Fireplace Preparation and Modification

We began by opening up the small, unused fireplace that previously housed a gas fire and flue. The existing setup was inadequate for the new stove, necessitating a complete overhaul. We cut in a new lintel to extend the height of the original fireplace, ensuring the space could accommodate the new multifuel stove comfortably.

Flue Installation

One of the critical steps was the installation of the flue liner. We dropped a Miflue 316 liner, which is renowned for its durability and efficiency, and connected it with a pot hanging cowl on the roof. At the fireplace end, we used a twist-on adapter, ensuring a secure and efficient connection that meets all safety standards. A pot hanging cowl is a device that fits over the chimney pot to keep out rain and debris while allowing the flue gases to escape efficiently.

Base and Tiling Work

To provide a stable and aesthetic base for the stove, we laid a fresh concrete base, which was then ready for tiling. The recess and the face of the chimney breast were adorned with brick-effect tiles, adding a rustic charm to the modern installation. We also cut out the flooring to lay a fresh base and tile hearth, ensuring the stove sits on a robust and heat-resistant surface.

Stove Fitting and Commissioning

The final phase involved fitting the Ecosy+ Newburn stove via a vitroes pipe. After meticulous sealing and testing, we commissioned the stove, ensuring it was ready for safe and efficient use.

Overcoming Installation Challenges

This project was not without its challenges. The primary issue was the limited size and condition of the original fireplace. Extending the height and reinforcing the structure required precise engineering and careful handling to avoid damage to the surrounding masonry. Additionally, installing the flue liner in an older property presented its own set of challenges, particularly ensuring the integrity of the chimney was maintained.
