Initial Assessment and Preparations
Our journey began with the removal of an existing gas fire and marble surround. Upon exposing the original recess, we discovered that it required boarding to meet the customer’s specifications for tiling.
We meticulously boarded the recess and squared off the fireplace, laying a solid concrete base and cutting a slate hearth to the desired shape.
Tiling and Finishing Touches
Using split-faced tiles, we transformed the fireplace’s look, finishing the edges with aluminium for a crisp, clean line to plaster against.
We then sanded and smoothed the existing plaster to seamlessly blend with the new plaster around the edge of the recess.
After allowing the plaster to dry for 24 hours, we proceeded to fit, commission, and complete the installation of the MiFire Tinderbox Large stove.
As a final touch, we hand-carved an oak mantel, enhancing the rustic charm of this Pontardawe stove installation.
Install Challenges and Solutions
One of the key challenges we faced was the need to properly prepare the original recess for tiling.
This required precise boarding and squaring off, ensuring a stable and aesthetically pleasing base for the tiling work.
The use of split-faced tiles added another layer of complexity, necessitating careful alignment and finishing with aluminium edging.
We also needed to ensure that the new plaster seamlessly matched the existing plaster, requiring meticulous sanding and smoothing.
